HI
After all the gardening we did, the sun shining on the flowerbeds makes/made a
beautiful sight
which one (made/ makes) is correct and why?
To be honest with you,
Arnab1994, I would urge you not to worry too much about isolated sentences like this. You have to keep in mind that SC questions provide five answer choices and some sort of context to guide you to a certain interpretation. Sometimes a well-meaning guidebook, tutor, or teacher will toss out a sentence such as the one above to teach to some specific point, but then the words just look bare. Maybe the sentence could be thought of in two ways:
1) A sequence of events—
After we did X, Y was the result.2) An explanation—
[Because] we did X, Y is the result.Yes, the word
after can function in this explanatory capacity in such a sentence. See the following example from
the Cambridge Dictionary, for example:
- After (= because of) what she did to me, I'll never trust her again.
My advice? Practice with real SC questions to learn the strategies that work for you. Picking apart standalone sentences will likely lead to confusion down the road when you see exceptions to what you believed to be firm rules.
Good luck with your studies.
