Here are my 2 cents:

If you have time, a good way to recognize idioms is to read. Read articles in the Wall Street Journal, The NY Times, The New Yorker, etc.

If you lack time, memorize sentences containing idioms. "the car is not only red but also fast."

Puting idioms into sentences makes memorization much easier.

Agree. This is really effective. Iam in the process of making a usage sheet. Will post it once completed.
