If it had been so, GMAC could not have thought out so many tricky questions with "it". I think "it" can or cannot have clear antecedent depending on the context (here it is not necessary). By the way you have a mistake in D => you should get rid of the last before!!!

By placing this modifier in the beggining it refers to "the time before being an expartiate was fashionable"
