Can some please explain the present perfect tense.

Has been
is this tense used for an action that took place in the past and continues in the present.

had been?

had been?



Yes. Has been and Have been indicate and action that occured in the past and continues today.

"I have been studying for the GMAT for over 3 months now." --still studying today =(--

"I thought John had given me the rent payment" Here "had" indicates two past actions. I thought was one action and had given me is the earlier past action.
