Scenario A: Which one would you choose? Is one more correct than the other? Is it a rule that if the second element can reuse the first part, it is correct?
(A1) John was interested in English but not Economics
(A2) John was interested in English but not in Economics

Scenario B: Which one would you choose? Are they all correct?
(B1) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than the speed of the car that Joe drives
(B2) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than the speed of the one that Joe drives
(B3) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than the speed of that that Joe drives
(B4) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than that of which Joe drives
(B5) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than that which Joe drives
(B6) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than that of Joe's
(B7) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than Joe's


I know to look for ||ism but what is the test you use to ensure the pronoun "that" performs its function correctly?
Also, would the second part only have "of" if the first part does?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to find a method to properly choose the right answer in these cases as opposed to going with what sounds right. (There is no OA to this, it's just for us to understand the concepts better. Sorry)

A1 can be eliminated. A2 is llel and perfect.

B1--ok
B2--One & that redundant
B3--does not make sense..2 thats
B4---which.. is not needed
B5---which..is not needed
B6---Joe's what? Joe's car is better
B7--speed compared to Joe's something..?

B6 will be correct, if it has joe's car in the end.
correct me if I missed any thing.

TAking a shot at it. Let me know your thoughts.

both A1 and A2 look good to me as both maintain parallelism

Scenario B: Which one would you choose? Are they all correct?
(B1) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than the speed of the car that Joe drives
Correct usage.
(B2) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than the speed of the one that Joe drives
Incorrect because one does not clearly indicate a car it cud be a truck for all you know. Hence using 'one' changes the meaning if you are comparing speed of car only.
(B3) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than the speed of that that Joe drives
incorrect because you cannot be sure what 'that' refers to? Cud it not refer to Billy too?
(B4) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than that of which Joe drives
Incorrect because 'that of which' does not substitute 'speed of car'
(B5) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than that which Joe drives
Incorrect. We are comparing speed of car and 'that' in the later part cud only mean car resulting in comparing speed of car with car. -or- if that correctly reflect speed of the car then which is incorrect usage.
(B6) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than that of Joe's
Incorrect because it is not clear what 'that' refers to. If it refers to 'speed' then again you are comparing speed of car with speed of Joe's.
(B7) The speed of the car that Billy drives is greater than Joe's
Cud be correct though it changes the meaning. here it is comparing speed of the car the billy drives (he may not own it) with the speed of the car that is joe's and not necessarily the car that joe drives. Hence I would stay away from this choice

Agree completely here, but wouldn't "car" and "that" be redundant if "one" and "that" are redundant? I agree except I would say B1 and B2 are good, not just B1. Kudos for the question.
