I just read this and while it does seem very simple, I think it seems simple only because it's a rule we know but don't articulate it. When we read it, it makes sense and seems like we always knew it.
Such as is used to give examples, whereas like is used to make a comparison.
"He donated great works of literature such as the Count of Monte Cristo, Iliad, and Homer."
"He ran through the crowd like a wild man."
I hope this helps someone else as much as it helped me.
