The formerly popular mayor of Hermosa City lost his bid for reelection this year and the local newspaper claimed that the election's result was due to the recent sexual harassment case brought against the former mayor while he was still in office. However, the sexual harassment case would not have had such a deleterious effect on the mayor's reelection campaign if the mayor had been more effective in dealing with Hermosa City's increasingly high crime rate, which needs to be lowered if the next mayor wishes to win reelection.
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion about how to prevent a loss in a mayoral reelection campaign in Hermosa City?
Before there was a crime problem in Hermosa City, two mayors were voted out of office amidst allegations of sexual harassment. The city of Hermosa has not added additional police to deal with the increasing crime rate. The previous mayor's approval rating had been falling prior to the release of sexual harassment allegations. The new mayor of Hermosa City is a retired police chief and was seen by the majority of Hermosa City's citizens as the candidate that would be most tough on crime during the last election. Most of the increase in crime in Hermosa City is not violent in nature.

IMO A. The argument establishes a relationship between the crime rate, sexual harassment case and its effect on re-election. According to argument,
less crime rate -----> less effect of sexual harassment on re-election
Now, we need to weaken the conclusion that the mayor would not have lost if the crime had been handled. In other words, the effect of sexual harassment would not have been major if the crime rate were taken care of. The scenario which can weaken the conclusion is:
Crime rate has no co-relation with either effect of sexual harassment on re-election
Now lets look for options which satisfy this scenario.

A) Before there was a crime problem in Hermosa City, two mayors were voted out of office amidst allegations of sexual harassment. - CORRECT. This option clearly relates to our pre phrasing. Even when there was no crime sexual harassment had deleterious effects on the mayors election. B) The city of Hermosa has not added additional police to deal with the increasing crime rate. INCORRECT. Out of scope. C) The previous mayor's approval rating had been falling prior to the release of sexual harassment allegations. INCORRECT. At first look this might look like a correct option but this option does not talk about the required relationship between crime rate, sexual harassment and re-election. Infact, this option leaves a wide scope of speculation. Even if the rating of mayor was falling, how do we know this would impact his/her chances of re-election. D) The new mayor of Hermosa City is a retired police chief and was seen by the majority of Hermosa City's citizens as the candidate that would be most tough on crime during the last election. INCORRECT. Out of scope. This option tries to touch the common sense aspect of test takers. We should not fall in this trap E) Most of the increase in crime in Hermosa City is not violent in nature. INCORRECT. I would ask so what?
