Q22:
Whales originated in the freshwater lakes and rivers of ancient Asia about sixty
million years ago. Not until about ten million years later did species of whales
develop specialized kidneys enabling them to drink salt water. Although fossil
evidence shows that some early whale species that lacked such kidneys sometimes
swam in the Earth’s saltwater oceans, these species must have had to return frequently to freshwater rivers to drink.
Which of the following is most strongly supported by the information given?
A. Fossils of whale species dating from between sixty million and fifty million
years ago will not be found on continents that were at the time separated from
ancient Asia by wide expanses of ocean.
B. Among whale fossils that date from later than about fifty million years ago,
none are fossils of whale species that drank only fresh water.
C. Fossils of whale species that drank fresh water will not be found in close
proximity to fossils of whale species that drank salt water.
D. The earliest whales that drank salt water differed from fresh-water-drinking
whales only in their possession of specialized kidneys.
E. Between sixty million and fifty million years ago, the freshwater lakes and
rivers in which whales originated were gradually invaded by salt water.

E shud be it!
Whales orignated in fresh water though developed kidneys to drink salty water in the situation in which E holds
EDIT----
I suppose A is better option over here....it's quite close between A vs. E.....if i take the OG approach, which says always stay close to the core of the argument presented, so looking at options....option E infers abt water bodies while A talks abt Whales and the core of argument is Whale so A
Here the conclusion is: Whales b/w 60 million and 50 miilon years had to return frequently to freshwater rivers to drink as they did not have the specialized kidneys.
Amit as you said E does not support this conclusion. A is best we have in the choices.

I think scope of the problem is not if whales could be found farther from ancient Asia rather than if they had specialized kidneys to live in salt water and if few of them moved from salt water to fresh water that proves they didn't have those kidneys at that time.
I vote for E but as you guys said, this is really difficult to decide between A & E

Definite A.
Essentially the argument says that: whales originated in Asia. So if continents were seperated by oceans, then whales could not have gone across these oceans from 60-50 mil years ago.
B: Too extreme, some evolve some don't.
C: Can't assess this at all. And its probably not true anyway.
D: they could differ in other ways.
E: Not discussed.
I don't understand how there is any argument for E. There is no information in the passage to suggest this at all. E is so far off the map from what the focus of the passage is.
