Yes even the test says, its C. I had selected E myself.

I couldn't find it to be weakening, but yes its certainly neutral compared to the other choices.

Thanks,

The new drug Prozac and the old one Elavil are about equally effective in treating various forms of depression, although patients on the newer drug may have slightly fewer side effects. Thus, revenue from the sale of the new drug is going to far exceed the revenue from the sale of the old drug.

All of the following statements weaken the conclusion of the argument above, EXCEPT:

(A) Elavil is also used as a powerful anti-emetic medicine.
(B) The Drug Control Authorities in six states have refused to allow the sale of Prozac till some more tests are carried out.
(C) Some side effects of Elavil are common to Prozac as well.
(D) Prozac is not recommended as an anti-depressant for diabetics and heart patients.
(E) The unit sale price of Elavil is higher than that of Prozac.

What would you pick ?

I picked C at a glance because the fact that some side effects are common is totally irrelvant: we know that Prozac has fewer side effects and this is what we car for. anyway, after having answered the question, I thought E also sounded good. If Prozac costs less, then more people would buy it....anyway, we don't know if and how consumers are sensible to price. C is definetely the best answer choice.

(A) If it is used for another purpose, the Elavil keep pace with Prozac so this weakens the arguement.
(B) If some states have refused to sell Prozac, then that weakens the arguement.
(C) Correct...If both side effects are the same but Prozac has fewer side effects then we can assume that Prozac should sell better thus strengthening the conclusion.
(D) If Prozac isn't recommended, then these patients may buy Elavil which would weaken the arguement.
(E) This neither strengthen nor weakens the conclusion because although the unit prices are different, we don't know the quantity sold and the conclusion is focusing on revenue from sales.

Since this is a EXCEPT question lets rephrase the question: Following statement does not weaken the conclusion of the argument:

(A) Elavil is also used as a powerful anti-emetic medicine. [Hold it – This has no necessary correlation to the conclusion of the argument – hold it]
(B) The Drug Control Authorities in six states have refused to allow the sale of Prozac till some more tests are carried out. [This weakens the argument – Eliminate it]
(C) Some side effects of Elavil are common to Prozac as well. [Hold it – This has no direct effect on the conclusion of the argument – hold it]
(D) Prozac is not recommended as an anti-depressant for diabetics and heart patients. [This may weaken the argument as the revenues from diabetic and heart patients are missed in this case – Eliminate it]
(E) The unit sale price of Elavil is higher than that of Prozac. [This has direct effect on the conclusion, however can weaken the argument as unit price of Elavil is higher than Prozac – Eliminate it]

Struck between – A and C

One thumb rule – When we have two items compared in the argument, it is always better to select answer choices that somehow addresses the both issues].
Eliminate – A

Answer: C
