I remember a joke here. If you ask a timid Indian guy what kind of a girl he would like to marry. He will say homely girl. This means a girl who is a home maker, mild and understanding and definitely not ugly or unattractive. Even I didnt know the exact meaning till I hit this CR and did a lookup at dictionary.com.
What a relief to know the real meaning

Some time back I faced a same situation as anand. Ditto. This must be not more than a week back. My American colleague asked a meaning of a name of her neice's mother in law. I said homely. They started like ahm!!. I realized that I used an inapproriate word and made an attempt to control the damage quickly.
Coincidental. Humm!
