A - this is correct, since the first boldface, he is stating something and the second he is concluding.
B - he is not opposing
C - he is not challenging the explanation
D - the first is not a judgement, it is a hypothesis
E - the first is not a generalization and the second is not an exceptional case

Hope that makes it clear.

Hey All,

As usual, the discussion here is right on track, and you all got to the right answer. I just want to add something in terms of generalization. This is an Evaluate the Argument question, and it is quite common that you can answer these well as long as you outline in terms of premises and conclusions. Often you won't need to understand the passage any better than that to answer these questions (making them a ways easier than many other categories on the test).

Conclusion: The cold did cause the lowered bottom dwelling population (Statement 1)
Premises: EVERYTHING ELSE (Statement 2)

That's right. There aren't any counter-premises here, so pretty much everything else is a premise. Now look at the answer choices. C claims the first statement is an explanation, which would be a premise (conclusions are claims, not explanations of those claims). D claims its a judgment used to SUPPORT something. Anything that supports something else is a premise.

Finally, both B and E claim that the second statement is a counter-premise (see how they both claim the second statement goes AGAINST the hypothesis?). The only answer left is A. And we didn't even need to understand what the heck was going on with plankton!

Hope that helps!

-t
