Hi,
In the Manhattan Sentence Correction Guide there is a sentence that needs or not to be corrected. Here is the original version:
According to grammatical rules this sentence could be an If ... Then construction with Then being hidden here. In such case the sentence is correct as the guide states that the Then clause takes could+base verb and the If clause takes a simple past.
OR
It could be a subjunctive mood:
According to the guide the correct answer is the subjunctive. Can someone please give a bit more details as to why the subjunctive wins over the If...Then construction?

Let me try to explain this case.
As per Manhattan's explanation provided, "If he was ..." usage will always be wrong. The reason being it always signals the subjunctive mood. i.e. this case will always uncertain or unreal. In this case as well, "...,if Sam was here." the author is sure that Sam was not there. Hence, we should use subjunctive verb "were".
