I first thought of D, because of 'between', however, between.....or is awkward, so finally went with A.
Ideally, the answer should have been : between.....and

OA and OE please.

I went with D.

When using between, it must be between two objects (twins in this case). In the sentence, you're distinguishing between either identical twins "or" between fraternal twins. You're not comparing the two different types of twins with each other, rather you're comparing the one set of twins with one another.

OA?

While admittedly, ‘to distinguish x from y’ and ‘distinguish between x and y’ are very basic idioms, the question that haunts is whether you will ever get such an isolated , open and shut case in a toughie as GMAT. But I concede this is an irrelevant thought.

I would like to reverse my answer and go back to A because, the latter part of the example clearly distinguishes identical twins(X) from fraternal twins (Y) and not one another within each of these two distinct groups.

D.

"between two people" is correct. between needs to follow two items. D has two types of pair(twins).

also, distinguish needs to follow between.

But between needs "and" to work.

(A) identical twins from -- distinguish x from y, is a correct idiom..
(B) identical twins and -- need BETWEEN to have AND. so eliminated
(C) identical twins or -- need between or and kind of things between comparisons -- eliminated
(D) between identical twins or -- need AND when we see BETWEEN.. eliminated
(E) among identical twins or -- Among is for more than 2 things.. here we just have identical and fraternal twins... eliminated

so, it is A.

To distinguish identical twins from fraternal twins, one must understand that identical twins come from a single egg that is later divided, while fraternal twins come from two separate eggs.

(A) identical twins from
(B) identical twins and
(C) identical twins or
(D) between identical twins or
(E) among identical twins or

my answer is A.
pls.OA

Hi... if possible just clear one doubt for me. its always between x and y and not btw x or Y so in that case distinguish X from Y is the correct idiom..

Thanks in advance

I chose (A) because "distinguish X from Y" is the correct idiom.
