Q. Once near-slums with cheap rents, neighborhoods in the South Bronx have been increasingly gentrified in recent decades as urban renewal drives away the poor
A. been increasingly gentrified
B. been increasingly gentrification
C. been of increased gentrification
D. gentrified, increasingly
E. increased gentrification
"in recent decades" means something that started in the past and continues in the present.
C is out because "been of" is awkword.
"increasingly" is an adverb, but gentrification is not an adverb/adjective/verb - B & E out.
Now between A & D, I selected D because I thought its short n precise. But I'm not too sure why D is wrong.
Is it because verb if followed by adverb not vice-versa?
Can someone tell me why D is wrong ? Why A is better choice than D?

IMO A is the correct answer here.
Passive form is needed as neighbourhoods cannot gentrify themselves (but they are gentrified through urban renewal).
