I came across two SC corrections as part of the exercises for the "Pronoun" chapter.
(1)
Incorrect: Kathy's suitcase was so stuffed that shedecided to pack another.
Correct:Kathy's suitcase was so stuffed that Kathydecided to pack another.
(2)
Incorrect: The students' work improved over the course of the semester, and the studentsshould be commended for it.
Correct:The students' work improved over the course of the semester, and theyshould be commended for it.
I understand example (1). Here is my logic:
In (1) She - subject pronoun ,Kathy's - possessive noun.
She does not have a reference noun and hence Kathy must be used.
In (2) , they is a subject pronoun and Iam not able to figure out how it can be correct in (2). Both of these examples are from the same chapter in the Manhattan SC guide. Does anybody else thinks there is a problem here ? Please discuss.

Here is an example -
The player's helmets need to be repainted before they are used in Sunday's game.
Here they refers to the noun Helmets.They is a subject form of pronoun, so should have a clear antecedent noun.
The students' work improved over the course of the semester, and theyshould be commended for it.
Similarly, it here refers to the work and they here isn't a good way to refer to students in possessive case.
Hence correct form is -
The students' work improved over the course of the semester, and the students should be commended for it.
