Let us first of all appreciate one thing. Can attribute or can be attributed with a certain amount of speculation is what the original intends to mean. Using definitive terms such as attributable to or attribute to are distortion of the intent.
(A) Much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes can be attributed; seems alright.
(B) many of the increase in cases of type II diabetes are attributable; increase here is used as a quantum and hence non-countable; many denotes countability and hence is wrong use
(C) they can attribute much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes : who is the ‘they’? No suitable plural antecedent found in the choice
(D) doctors attribute much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes: Doctor’s definitive attribution is distortion of original intent.
(E) many of the cases of increased type II diabetes can be attributed: Increased type II diabetes? If so, is there decreased type II diabetes? Increased should modify cases rather than type II diabetes; wrong word order.
