Question 92 p.262 of OG second edition of states.
which is supposedly correct as is. But my understanding is that you should not use nouns or pronouns in the possessive case, as antecedents. Although they may imply a noun, reference to them will be ambiguous.
Here "its" is suppose to refer to "the parasite's" which is similar to "the parasite's hosts" and "hosts" is plural, so the correct pronoun would be "their." You could say that because of this you clear the ambiguity because then "its" must refer to "the parasite" but I don't think you can refer back to a possessive noun with a pronoun.
A little help somebody please?

In my opinion its actually refers to parasite's (ie. it to parasite). Possessive pronouns (its, his etc) can refer to possessive noun.
