The idea was to place myself as George Washington and hopefully raise all the questions that would go along with it, such as, ‘What if Japanese-Americans were in a position in this country where one might have been George Washington?’ I mean, that is such a stretch to think of that. But I like the absurdity of that extreme.”
For me here AS is incorrect, we need like according to GMATclub grammar guide page 54.

As has a meaning as’ in the place of ‘,’in the role of’ or ‘being’ used as a preposition or phrase. Placing ‘oneself like’ doesn’t sound pleasing

GMAT Grammar and newspaper/radio/tv writings are different. Newspaper/radio/tv and many other entities do not always strictly follow GMAT or even English grammer.
Never follow anything other than gmat grammar for gmat test.
