Hey Vicky, I'm not master at Verbal, but I hope my answers to some of your questions are helpful.
1) What are clauses and modifying clauses?
A clause is a sentence that has a subject and a verb.
E.g.
Swimming is good for health. (verb)
Note: In the example above, "Swimming" is the subject (gerund).
I'm not sure what a modifying clause is though.
2) What is subject verb agreement?
Subject-Verb agreement is pretty much tested on the GMAT. Bascially, you need to make sure the the subject of the sentence and the verb modifying the subject both agree in number.
E.g. of subject and verb not agreeing in number
Sam like to play basketball.
Sam is a singular noun, and therefore requires a singluar verb 'likes'.
E.g. of subject and verb agreeing in number
Molly enjoys going to the park.
Singular noun Molly, Singular verb enjoys.
There's also quite a number of issues that can affect the 'number' of a subject. You can go to the "Things to remember for SC" sticky to run them through.
3) When to use 'that'?
- as a relative pronoun to introduce modifier
- to introduce essential modifiers
