C is correct and for number of reasons:

A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year that The Golden Sun was recorded

=> year of recording is wrong as it qualifies year as year of recording etc..

=>"that" is needed to stress on the particular year

"was" is used for The golden Sun

I couldnt agree with your signature more!!! Nothing irks me more than someone posting an AC without an explantion. But my biggest peeve is when users just freaking post a question and never revisit the question to post OA.

A. it has verb problem.
B. wrong comparision.
C. correct.
D. that is supposed to refer Taylor's ballad instead of the Golden Sun
E. not idiomatic.

Could you elaborate on why B is wrong? I couldnt discern the wrong comparison. Could you please elaborate please.

B is comparing apples to oranges.

A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year of recording as [that of] The Golden Sun shows that Taylor was a more diverse musician than is commonly believed.

It is in fact comparing the "year of recording" to "The Golden Sun". You should add the portion in brackets to make the right comparison.
