I think this one is the useage of subjective and objective pronouns. In general the rule is--A pronoun replacing the subject should be should be in subjective form and A pronoun replacing the object should be in objective form.

here's a small list of the forms:

Arrived at it by restructuring the sentence in the same way as mba.

She can sing better than I(can) but she isn’t as pretty as I(am)

B). we need to use the subjective pronoun case. As the author is the subject here, we will be using subjective pronoun "I".

Subjective pronouns: I/We/you/he/she..
Objective: me/us/you/him/her..

'you' is right either way.

I chose B as well following the same reason
She can sing better than I can but she isn’t as pretty as I am

But due to some reason the OA is A
I guess the OA is wrong.
Only Carsen voted for A ... any justification for your choice CARSEN?

let me give it a try...

although I cannot proove why A has to be the right ans may be I can eliminate the rest and even B...

''singing'' is an action ... now when it comes to an action and comparision of actions of two different persons as is the case above... the use of ''do'' in neccessary...

like'' she can sing better than I do'' or ''she sings better than I do'' the use of ''can'' here creates the confusion... and when B says ''she can sing better than I '' I guess we cannot assume ''can'' here...

as for the second part of the B choice it is right...

''pretty'' is a fact or a feature and not an action... and so does not require the use of ''DO''
ex: she is taller than I ... now being tall is more of a fact than of an action.. and hence just simply putting or having ''I '' implies ''I am'' thr

whereas an action ceratinly needs a referent which is either ''does'' or do'' and B does not have that nor ''do'' any of the other choices above have.... U see I have used the ''do'' even here to compare ..cos I have used ''other choices HAVE ''and ''have'' indiactes ''possesion'' which is an action...

hope I was clear... don know If I was... but it was based purely on a little of basics and a lot on instinct so bare with me ...better info' welcome

Let us see choice by choice - Only 2 choices are meet expectations here and need analysis. Choice, a and b. The rest are wrong, we do not have to go in detail.

She can sing better than me but she isn’t as pretty as I

(A) She can sing better than me but she isn’t as pretty as I.

If it were separate sentence, then YES, She can sing better than I (do) - is correct. The insertion of BUT, joins the sentences. If there had been a choice, She sings better than I do, but she is not as pretty as I am. - Bingo, we all wud have closed our eyes and picked this one.
the absense of DO in the original sentence, made me choose A. I could have not have assumed "DO" next to "Better than I" because it is followed by "but". Whereas in standard in english, I (am/do/can) is understood, if it was the last word, to justify a verb in a sentence. (He is taller than I (am)).

Just a tip - - - I give an example in here to show that usage of "me" is allowed.

She loves him more than me - Correct form. -----
She loves him more than I ------- Correct form as well.

But in the second sentence, the whole meaning changes. The first says, She loves the person more than she loves me. And second one says, she loves the person, more than I love him. Though I cannot relate the above example directly to the original sentence, this example is to show that "ME" can exist in a sentence.

I shall try to find a better explaination, and let you know soon. But, I hope this one helped.

Fuqua is right. It is B.

The sentence without Ellipsis would be - " She can sing better than I can but she is not as pretty as I am." So B is the closest choice.

I agree. The pronoun should be in the subjective case in comparisons with the subjects of understood verbs.

in one of the tests though, the correct answer was A, which I think is incorrect.

which of the above two options is correct ? please explain. if possible please give the rule
