E, the only choice maintains llism, is correct.. all verbs are in present tense so E is parallel.

Some State department officials hope to end the border skirmish by bargaining with the new dictator, others propose the stiff imposition of stiff economic sanctions on the country's exports, and still others demand that NATO launch a full scale invasion.

Here is what i was thinking:

Some State department officials hope to end the border skirmish by bargaining with the new dictator, others [hope to end the border skirmish] by proposing imposing stiff economic sanctions on the country's export, and still others [hope to end the border skirmish] by demanding that NATO launch a full scale invasion

i think we need to look the non-underlined part of the sentence. the second non-underlined part, "that NATO launch a full scale invasion", doesnot go with "by demanding". i mean "demand that" sounds better than "demanding that". moreover, to use still others by demanding, the non-underlined part should be " that nato's full scale of invasion".

hope it helps.

I will go with C on this.

C maintains parallelism in 2 ways. verbs and infinitives, hence is my choice.

Just because verbs are in parallel, does make a sentence correct. All other things need to be parallel too.

(A) by proposing imposing stiff economic sanctions on the country's export, and still others by demanding
-OUT, no verbs in 2nd and 3rd list, these lists are called sentence fragments.

(B) by proposing the imposition of stiff economic sanctions on the country's exports, and still others demand
-OUT, no verbs in 2nd, same as A
(C) propose imposing stiff economic sanctions on the country's exports, and still others are demanding
Keep this

(D) are proposing the stiff imposition of stiff economic sanctions on the country's exports, and still others are demanding

- OUT, the imposition of, weird construction

(E) propose the stiff imposition of stiff economic sanctions on the country's exports, and still others demand

- OUT, the stiff imposition of, weird construction again, we need "to impose".

Here is what I think, if you are using infinitives, they need to be parallel, you can definetly mix "to infinitive" with "ing infinitive" but care must be taken to seperate "ing infinitive" from gerunds.

A for me

The connector of the three parts are ','. . Therefore, the second part
should not be an independent sentence. After this screening, only
A and B remains. But A is better than B because of the || structure.

Some State department officials hope to end the border skirmish by bargaining with the new dictator, others by proposing imposing stiff economic sanctions on the country's export, and still others by demanding that NATO launch a full scale invasion

actually by proposing imposing ... seems a little awkard for me.

Wow!! We have three different answers for this question, and all of you have given very good explanations. I will wait another day for more participation, before giving out the answers.

One clue: I chose A for this SC and I was wrong.

Anyone explain me what this phrase means

"stiff imposition of stiff economic sanctions "

Cant we say "imposition of stiff economic sanctions" or
"stiff imposition of economic sanctions"

Taking a look again, since we have so many answers.

C is the only one that stands.

Rest all is plain JUNK.

The parallelism is between "hope", "propose" and "are demanding" which indicates the progress..
hope to end.. others propose [to end.. by] imposing.., and still other are demanding....
