Ok besides A & B...all are pretty Close...

I will go with C as it is fairly clear...E would have been my second choice...

I would say D.

A - incorrect because christian europe should be after the comma..not the failure.

B - doesn't sound right

C - close, but you don't need the "which had"

E - tense error. makes it seem that the ignored and realized occurred at the same time.

What is OA?

Learning of the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453, the failure of the crusading movement became apparent to Christian Europe which had ignored earlier major defeats.

A) the failure of the crusading movement became apparent to Christian Europe which had ignored earlier major defeats
B) Christian Europe realized that the crusading movement had failed, which had ignored major defeats
C) Christian Europe, which had ignored earlier major defeats, realized that the crusading movement had failed
D) Christian Europe, ignoring earlier major defeats, realized that the crusading movement had failed
E) Christian Europe ignored earlier major defeats and realized that the crusading movement had failed.

I like C here.

C clearly breaks down the sequence of events. Christian europe had ignored earlier defeats -> learned of fall of constantinople -> realized that crusades failed.

D makes it so that Europe learned of the fall of constantinople and ignored earlier defeats at the same time.

I think the answer is C.

A) "the failure" does not correctly follow "learning of the fall"
B) "which had ignored major defeats" is out of place
D) This statement sounds like Christian Europe intentionally ignored major defeats only to realize that the crusade had failed.
E) This incorrectly states that the events were simultaneous

Another vote for C.

A is out because Christian Europe, not "the failure", learned of the fall of Constantinople.

B implies that the crusading movement ignored the major defeats, as opposed to Christian Europe.

D has a time problem. Christian Europe ignored the earlier defeats prior to their realization, not simultaneously to it.

E is wrong for a similar reason; it's implying a consecutive sequence of events (ignoring the major defeats and realizing the crusading movement failed) but it suggests that both of these events took place after Christian Europe learned of Constantinople's defeat.

Only C gets it right. My answer is C.

I would go for C.

Reasons: Correct use of modifier and subordinate phrase.

A : Imporper modifier
B : Imporper Tense (HAD), improper subordinate clause
C : Correct Answer
D : Improper clause
E : Same as D
Also, D,E change the meaning of sentense

OA/OE Plz

OA is C. The past perfect is necessary to show the sequence of tenses. AC D and E change the "meaning" of the sentence.
