In his final paintings, Paul Gauguin implicitly contrasts a materialistic European culture with what he regards as the natural existence of the people of Tahiti.

A) with what he regards as
B) with that which he regards to be
C) that he regards being
D) and that which he regards as
E) and what he regards to be

I choose (A). (B) is redundant with two consecutive relative pronouns "that which". (C) being is not favored in the GMAT. (D) and (E) violates idiom: "contrasts... with" sounds better than "contrasts... and".

Doesnt "A" create a bad contrast? I mean what is he comparing?

In A: doesnt the AC imply he is constrasting "materialistic European culture " with "what"?? Shouldnt the contrast be with "another culture".....

I chose B: "that" = culture and "which" does the restrictive clause deal. Not any culture but culture which.......

Let me know your thoughts.

The idiomatic expression is To contrast with. The same for Regard as

I pick A

I'll go for A...'Regards as' and 'contrasts with' are idiomatically correct.
