A) but rather should cause it to further that purpose

Why would someone pick A over B? What is wrong with B?

The contrast is needed and therefore the need for "but"?

The current need for diversification should not cause the organization to divert from its traditional purpose, but rather should cause it to further that purpose.

A) but rather should cause it to further that purpose
B) but should cause it to further that purpose instead
C) but rather should be seen as a way to cause it to further that purpose
D) and should cause it to further that purpose
E) and rather should cause it further that purpose.

Were are being tested about the construction not....but

D and E don't match this structure. B is also incorrect as the used of insted at the end of the sentence is not correct. Now one has to choose between A and C. Keeping parallelism is the key at this moment. I pick A against C

Why is the use of "instead" not correct at the end of the sentence? Its not a preposition.

i) the idiom is not ..........but.
ii) the contrast word rather is prefereed to instead. and instead is also misplaced.....

My answer is A.
1) Since there is a comparison - but - is the right word. This rules out D and E.
2) C is wordy and out.
3) But and instead seems to be redundant.
Hence my choice is A.

Jumping on the A train here. C is just way too wordy even though it conveys the same point.
