In the minds of many Europeans, before Canada was Canada, it was a vast wilderness, a cold and inhospitable place that nonetheless was the ancestral home of many Inuit tribes.

(A) before Canada was Canada, it was a vast wilderness

(B) before there was Canada, it was a vast wilderness

(C) it was a vast wilderness that was Canada

(D) Canada was what was a vast wilderness

(E) Canada was what had been known as a vast wilderness

IMO A

Confused Between A and E but there is a tense error in E use of past-perfect , IMO A
Nipungupta9081
Additionally, in option E the usage of "known as" is incorrect. Vast Wilderness was not Canada's previous name! It's just what canada was. Hope this brings more clarity! :)

I.

(E) Canada was what had been known as a vast wilderness -> "had been" incorrect use of tense.

So, I think A. :)

Why is the use of the tense incorrect? Isn’t it rhe passive voice in the past perfect tense?

Like:
- She had finished the job.
vs.
- The job had been finished by her.
