I go for D

A, B, and C all awkwardy modify the main clause. The first part modifies correctly Hawaii, but the second pharase, is a another main clause (contains subject + verb) and therefore will modify Hawaii again. But it actually refers to the population. They could be corrected by:
.... that still has a sizeable native population, which has a strong chance of remaining.
"which" clearly now modifies population.

between D and E I choose D because it is grammatically correct and E is wordier than D

" this group" means Hawaii state, which points to both the place and the people living in it --> so once we use " this group" , the use of "where" become meaningless. For this reason, I pick D.
Also another reason is that the use of "and" doesn't make the two clauses contrast e/other. The first clause states that Hawaii is a populous state, but the second clause indicates that it stills has a strong chance of remaining ---> they're clearly in contrasting relation. Only D corrects this by using a " ;" .

I do not think you can say  this group  to Hawaii. The native population here is referred as this group. Also  population is still sizable  is super wierd in my understanding. I'd be surprized if the answer is D.

I would say C.

A,B,D,E :- 'this group' is not explicit here. This group refers to the native population. The sentence intends to convey two things:-
1) Hawaii has a large native population
2) The native population has a strong chance of survival here.
in A & B the sizeable and native is used to define aspects of population. But in C, this group can be referred back to natives.


Hence I would go for C. It's hard to agree that the group refers to Hawaii. It would be very puzzling if the answer is D

Look for Conjunctions and/or multiple descriptions, which will indicate that lists are being tested. Here the multiple descriptions of the things that Hawaii has (that has a native pop .... and where). 
 
Rule and Fix:
A list must be of all nouns or all verbs and must be balanced . Here the list is not balanced since the front of the list has both a pronoun (that) and a verb (has) and the other part has only a pronoun. 
 
POE:
Eliminate any answer that uses the incorrect list, which eliminates A, B, and C.
 
Chunk and Compare:
Compare D to E. D removes the list by not including "and," avoiding the need to be balanced, however D states "the native population" is still sizable and E states "there is still a sizable native population" E more clearly expresses that population is of great number rather than composed of large individuals. Finally E is provides a balance list where, both descriptions are part of a list that refers to characteristics of Hawaii

In addition to the mentioned points -> question : could we not eliminate A because  that  introduces a phrase that is NOT essential. In this case, that describes something that is not essential and thus should be eliminated. Can someone explain?
