B/D out. we need noun after "fail to detect x" not a clause beginning "when"

A. there at the end looks suspicious

E is definitely out coz " indicates" breaks the parallelism.
computer test detects a "virus" rather than" when a virus is present"---> B and D out.
"there is one" sounds a little awkward.
C maintains best parallelism and avoid above flaws. C it is.

Explanation:
Spot the Error ( to learn more about the common error types and how to spot them):

Look for Conjunctions and/or multiple descriptions. The list in this sentence is the list of things the computer test will do: fail to detect a virus ....and indicate ...

Rule and Fix:
A list must be of all nouns or all verbs and must be balanced. The list is currently not balanced since the beginning of the list uses "it is present" but the end of the list does not balance that by using it (the end of the list uses the pronoun "one."

POE:
A, B, D and E (neither D nor E properly balance the list.

We are obviously testing for pronouns.

Therefore, the best answer is C.

"E" is too wordy and long. Between A & C, C is the better choice.
