According to the subject of the main clause, A,B and E should be left out. Between C and D, I choose D. The underlined part of the sentence is modifying the noun period. I think D is better to express the idea that pediod lasted more than half a million years.

IMO its C)...b/c "more than" and "period of" are idiomatic...

Doesn't "years" imply duration? So I wouldn't count it with "more", but it should be "longer".

Between B & C. It should be C Usage '...evidence.....is vast....'
