NOTE: This question comes from Manhattan Review (not Manhattan Prep!) GMAT Sentence Correction Guide, 6th edition (2016).

BOTH B AND D ARE CORRECT; therefore, the question is retired.

It appears that Manhattan Review -- different from Manhattan Prep -- transcribed OPTION D INCORRECTLY.

B) The answer can usually be found if all the correct procedures are followed, by employing the elimination technique. … Why is this choice missing an important word from the original namely "the correct answer'? It is just not an answer that one is looking for but the correct answer after going through all the drills. substantively altered intent.

C) The correct answer to following all the correct procedures can usually be found by employing the elimination technique.-- 'correct answer to following all' is wrong. meaning totally changed -

D) When the correct procedures are followed using the elimination technique, the answer can usually be found. -- Why the word "correct" is missing, as in B?
E) Employing the elimination technique and the answer can usually be found although all the correct procedures are followed. -- This choice doesn't make any sense in relation to the original intent.

All in all, can't find worthwhile correct choice. Is this really an MGMAT question? I hesitate to believe.

Hi, thank you for helping. This isn't from MGMAT, but is from Manhattan Review Sentence Correction book. The explanation provided by the company states that D is wrong because the meaning is altered and only B's meaning is kept intact. Any further advice on how to approach this question better?

This source is not official. (B) and (D) as they stand are both okay.

As I explain below, (D) seems to have been transcribed incorrectly by Manhattan Review itself.

We can eliminate A, C, and E -- but not B or D.

Split #1: Modifier error
A "dangling modifier" is usually an -ING modifier that either modifies the wrong subject or lacks an explicit subject to modify.

-ING + COMMA, which in that construction is a noun modifier, should be followed immediately by the subject that the phrase should modify.

(A) Employing the elimination technique, the correct answer can usually be found if . . .

A: The correct answers most certainly cannot be "employing the elimination technique."
-- The subject of the modifier is wrong. Answers do not think or employ elimination techniques.
-- The subject of the modifier is missing. WHO would be employing elimination techniques?

E: The subject of the modifier is missing
The modifier is either
(1) "Employing the elimination technique and the answer . . ."
OR
(2) "Employing the elimination technique. . . "
In both cases, WHO is employing the techniques?

Eliminate A and E

Split #2: Illogical meaning

(C) indicates that the answer to the procedures can be found -- not that the answer can be found by using the procedures.

Eliminate C

"Answer" and "correct answer" are synonyms in this question, a fact that can be derived from the context of the question and options.

In other words, "answer" rather than "correct answer" in (B) neither changes meaning nor disqualifies (B).

Although (D) begins with "when" and is not attached to a defined time or time period, that "rule" is applied with wild inconsistency by GMAC.
I have never seen an official question whose correct answer depends on a strict use of "when" in this kind of context.

B and D are both acceptable.
That fact is not acceptable.
