OA is E.

laxieqv: can you elaborate on why we need " that" for noun clause in answer B?

Choice E appears quite clumsy with 2 "that"'s. That's (forgive the pun) why i rejected E and had to settle for B. Unfortunately, B has a problem in that it uses which, a relative pronoun that could refer to the Mount Everest.

so you mean B is wrong becoz "marking" is the verb of "an asteroid" then?!

okie laxi, first thax for complmnt. :good

i am little confused with your "that". which "that" you are refering? the one in place of "which" or one after extinctions? both "that" donot fix the problem.

"making" itself is not a verb so it cannot be a verb of any noun.

Sixty-five milion years ago, according to some scientists, an asteroid bigger than Mount Everest slammed into North America, which, causing plant and animal extinctions, marks the end of the geologic era known as the Cretaceous period.

B: which caused the plant and animal extinctions marking
E: an event that caused the plant and animal extinctions that mark

Marking in B needs to be in the past tense, so that leaves E. E isn`t a perfect sentence, but it`s definately the best of the lot.

FACT: Most commercial jumbo jets cruise at 29,000ft- the exact same altitude as Mt. Everest above sea level.

Mt Everest may be the tallest mountain above sea level, but it certainy isn`t the tallest mountain on the planet. There are two other mountains that are well over 35,000 ft. Any takers for GMAT Jeapordy?

Correct. The base of these two mountains are at the bottom of the Pacific ocean. https://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk ... tm#tallest

For answer choice E, is it acceptable for a sentence to have two "that's" following closely after one another?

For answer choice B, what is the problem with the sentence? Does the problem lie with the use of "which"? Is it the omission of "that"? Or is it the inappropriate use of "marking" (present continuous tense) instead of past tense ? A little confused....

PS: I find Gmatprep really difficult. The answers to sentence correction are so close and the correct answer appears "unacceptable"(ie not perfect) sometimes. What do you think?

Understand that we are supposed to pick the best answer, not the perfect answer. That is much easier said that done, especially under a lot of time pressure......
