While many of the constituents of the congresswoman believe her recent stance on the proposed rent-control statutes contradict her platform when she ran and that she should therefore not be reelected, the vast majority of those who voted for her in the previous election reported that they intended to do so in the next election.

In my opinion D is the correct Answer , but i am confused why E is not?

Answer is E

Believe needs to take "that" so A, B, C are out

I think latest is idiomatic...D should write "most recent"

In addition, here is what I found from the web dictionary: 

 Latest:  adj 1: up to the immediate present; most recent or most up-to-date; "

Latest means its the newest presently 

Ex. The latest technology in mp3 players includes Apple's iPods. 
Ex2. The latest edition of Time magazine named Bill & Melinda Gates Persons of the Year. 

 Recent:  adj 1: being new in a time not long past

So to me, recent denotes something of the immediate past.

Ex. His recent trip to Africa ==> He just went to Africa not long ago

So the use of "latest" in this sentence is correct since we want to differentiate her "new, latest" stance from the stance she took when she "ran".

I too think it is E...
Reason:
The statement tell us that she had taken a stance earlier and has now reversed it. Thus, rather than recent, latest would correctly identify with 'the newest change'...

But what about "her running platform" in choices B, C, D and E. Isn't this a wrong construction since it conveys that the platform is running?

it's clear fight between 'recent' & 'latest'.
I'm not sure but 'E' sounds better to me.

I think recent is more appropriate here.

latest is used for a series. if the congresswoman had taken a series of action agianst....., it would have been  latest  

but we don't have any information regarding that.

so recent is more appropriate here.

so D is my answer.

I feel-
Recent should be the word to use since latest is used when you are reffering to a particular stance in a series of stances that happened in the same time duration.
while the congresswoman did take some stances in her prev election, they cannot be considered while talking about stances taken in this election, hence recent is the answer.
Also recent does not refer to any particular stance nor does it follow a list.Here had there been two or more stances in the same election, recent would have been confusing
