"C" for me too.

"D" is very tempting due to its flow of "so...that" :)

I'll go with A, as it is related to cause/effec.

Sentence is not trying to compare something.

Good one MATT!

I was confused at to why there is "designate" in the original sentence insetad of "designated". I thought MATT didn't copy this one correctly

C makes sense.

C for me...

In the Renaissance, painters were so impressed with Leonardo da Vinci that they ignored their own training and designate as a masterpiece anything he painted.

(A) were so impressed with Leonardo da Vinci that they ignored
Not parallel.. they ignored....designate as a masterpiece
(B) were impressed with Leonardo da Vinci to such an extent that they were to ignore
were to....sounds awkward
(C) were so impressed with Leonardo da Vinci as to ignore
Parallel and COrrect
(D) were so impressed with Leonardo da Vinci that they had to ignore
No need of perfect tense here.
(E) were as impressed with Leonardo da Vinci as to ignore
so impressed is right IDIOM

Bhai
Nothing wrong with A, according to me.

Bhai,

note the present tense of 'designate' 'ignore' maintains || ism.

hence C

But I still do not understand when one should use

so X that

and

so X as to (here the emphasis is on the consequence but so is the case in the other format).

Any one wanna comment?

My pick : C

For almost the same reasons as andy_gr8, except that I eliminated "B" for being too wordy

Old Dream,

Here is a link to another question that tested these two idioms.

https://www.gmatclub.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... 548#166548

These two idioms are indeed very confusing.

Idiom: So X...that...Y....

Here, the phrase after Y introduces a subordinate clause that modifies X.

E.g. Schistosomiasis is so debilitating that it has become an economic drain

The part in blue obviously modifies schistosomiasis.

Idiom: So X..as to (be) Y

Here, this is used when the characteristic of X is so extreme in the particular case that Y results.

E.g. Bob is so tall as to reach the top shelf

In this question, I felt that the painters were so impressed as to ignore , thus C
