Professor
there is no need to use between. do not combine difference with in or between. the usage of between is clear; it is used to refer choices between two things.

so if we think in this way, the simple question becomes unnecessary a difficult one.

go with A because we need plural verb "help" for plural subject "subtle differences".

C is passive and also has singular verb for the plural subject..

Nice explanation professor.
I'll also vote for A.

Could someone please explain the usage of "difference in" and "difference between"?
Thank you!

In order to use between, I think u should have a sentence which reads.....difference between x and y...

differnce in how sound is heard.....determines.....sounds good to me..

Professor's explanation is good.
Avis, I think what you said is right in the usage of "difference between" and "difference in".

'Subtle differences' needs a plural verb 'help'.

ears....help... (correct S-V agreement)

(A) is the most active (and concise) of the remaining choices.

I thini C is best.

Between is usllay used as, between x and Y.
Here the statement tells about the quality of sound, which can be judge in subtle differences in sound

I originally chose D, before reading the Professor's explanations. Good one Prof. The answer is as you mentioned - A.
