'of' is throwing me off in E
Between A and E, I will go with A.

'of a type' is a correct usage.
So A, B and D are out.
In C, 'it' is not a clear reference so E should be the answer.

'of a type' is correct.

E is the best choice. 'to be of a type' suggests it is a member of a certain species.

Scientist exploring the eastern coast of Florida to North Carolina, an area known as the South Atlantic Bight, have come across a sponge, one that they believe is a type previously unknown to science.

A. that they believe is
B. that they believe it to be
C. they believe that it is of CHANGES MEANING
D. they believe that is
E. they believe to be of CHANGES MEANING

Here i think we are talking of "type" ... a new type which is unknown to science ... not something of a "type" which already exists (and ofcourse that is unknown to science) ... I think A is the correct answer...

help highly appreciated!!

Lets ace together !!

Your logic is correct however I believe 'of type' should be appropriate even though we are talking about a new type.

Example: This picture tube is of new type. [Correct]
This picture tube is a new type. [Incorrect]

The best answer is E. The pronoun that in A and B should be deleted, since the pronoun one is sufficient to introduce the modifier and the sentence is more fluid without it. Additionally, A, B and D, of is missing

OA please? A or E??
