D is the answer..

A takes the sentence out of context, while D carries the same past perfect tense for it's entirety-

'The single-family house constructed by the Yana, a Native American people who lived in what is now Northern California, was conical in shape, its framework of poles overlaid with stabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and was banked with dirt as high as three to four feet.'

D for me.

The single-family house constructed by the Yana, a Native American people who lived in what is now Northern California, was conical in shape, its framework of poles overlaid with stabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and was banked with dirt as high as three to four feet.

I agree that this one is looking for parallelism,

Even though A seems correct, I would go with D.

B/C it was the house that was banked with dirt and not the poles.

What is the OA?

IMO its D.

The green part describes the shape of the house not the house itself. I mean the parallel list is what is in the red part and the green part is not part of the list but its an extra piece of information.

D) was banked with dirt as high as

was is required for the
"... was.... , its.... was" combination referring to the Yana.

Still not convinced 'D' is the best...

Please explain better why 'A' is incorrect

should be A. D is in passive and is also not parallel.

I vote for A.

The rest imply that the dirt was as high as three to four feet. However the meaning should be that the house was banked up to that height.

This is the key explanation for why OA is A :)

B,E --> out. 'that' has no comparison to be made to
C ---> 'them' has no precedent
D ---> 'was banked' is awkward

A is the best.
