Although (C) is passive, it is the only choice that doesn`t use an article after appoint.
appointment to/as ---> unidiomatic
Additionally, D and E have way too many words crammed into a sentence without a pause.

It is between A and C
A seems to say that Colin's appointment was "given", which seems redundant...
I will go with C as it says "in the same year that he was appointed chairman"... I really don't like this phrase... can we really infer that Colin was appointed "to be" a chairman? if so, then it is correct... since it doesn't say "appointed by" chairman I guess we can infer "to be" here... please help me to make this clear!
