First of all we are talking ABOUT a novel hence you narrow down to 3 choices having the word ABOUT. Secondly, A compares successful authors with SR's novel, which is incorrect. B just does not sound right. I think the comparison in C is accurate where the success of the novels are compared with the novel written by Salman Rushdie. Hence C

The construction of C seems to be correct. But I don't understand the meaning."Just as with many authors, the novel was a failure."
Thus none seems to be correct. 

But I go for C too, I have no other choice.

2 things here...

1)Grimus seems to be a name of the novel, since it is placed after novel
2)Since the author was successful, it must be the novel that was an abject failure

maybe a typo? should be Like many successful authors', where the ' was omitted by accident? 

C would be the one I chose although i don't like the "with"... there is nothign to be with the author.

folks,

I think key word here is 'failure', & we are comparing 'two failures', failure or X & failure of Y. It's not necessary that X & Y are from same category.

Somehow, I feel uneasy with the concept that you  have to  compare failure of one novel to failure of another novel, particularly here.

The best answer is A. Choice A is concise and grammatically correct, using the comparative preposition, like, to express the comparison between many successful authors and Salman Rushdie.
