I agree with C

In a press conference given last week, the Mills Company spokesman explained that although other machines are cheaper, the competitor’s product costs twice as much as maintaining the new Mills’ machine.

A. the competitor’s product costs twice as much as maintaining the new Mills’ machine
product -> maintaining (not parallel)

B. the competitor’s product costs twice as much to maintain as the new Mills’ machine
not parallel
Need DOES at the end to complete the sentence

C. maintaining the competitor’s product costs twice as much as the new Mills’ machine does

D. maintaining the competitor’s product costs twice as much as it does for maintaining the new Mills’ machine
here we have maintaining in "it" and for maintaining following it... redundant

E. to maintain the competitor’s product costs twice as much as for the new Mills’ machine
awkward...

(B) compares correctly products to products, but I also think that there should be "does" at the end.

Therefore, (C) is probably the correct answer.

Guys, don't you think the right answer should have started with "the products" rather than "maintaining" after the comma?

You are partially right. The second phrase should start with a noun because the first part after "although" starts with a noun.

I think B uses ellipsis properly.

C incorrectly compares maintenace of a machine to the cost of another machine.

I`m keeping my chips on (B).

Hi biggamejames,

Can you explain the use of ellipsis in the given sentence.

It's basically omitting a noun that already appears in the sentence. The meaning isn't changed by taking it out.

If B uses it properly, then "costs" is not needed in the last part of the sentence.

Ellipsis is also commonly used following a noun representing the second thing being compared. For instance, in the following sentences, the final verbs are omitted.
e.g. He is as tall as his brother.
I am as good a swimmer as her sisters.

These sentences could also be written:
e.g. He is as tall as his brother is.
I am as good a swimmer as her sisters are.

I'll go with B.
A: compares cost of product to cost of maintenance.
B: seems correct
Other examples:

A book written by Tolstoy is as easy to read as a book authored by Dickens.
A meal cooked by me is as easy to digest as a can of worms.
[NOTE: The following forms are also correct -

A meal cooked by me is as easy to digest as is a can of worms.
A meal cooked by me is as easy to digest as a can of worms is.

C. compares cost of maintenance to cost of product.
D. lacks || ism
E. lacks ||ism
