Will go with E here.

IMO the questions tests comparison.

E correctly compares the process of other stars with that of the process in sun.
IMO d has a modifier problem.

for the sake of "it", "it" is supposed to refer to SUN
because sun'core is not the object that expand itself to red giant.
Conversely, SUN is the object that becomes red giant.
BUT
D provides that it can only refer to SUN'CORE so D is out.

Answer : E

A/B/C/D modify the Sun with the reference to a star.

Has to be E.

Can you explain why D is wrong?

as i mentioned above, a comma was necessary in D. it is also a good example of "sentence fragmant", a case of two IC not connected by a proper conjunction.

I think the problem with D is 'it'

is

it = hydrogen
or
it = sun ?

also

active voice is preferred

Can someone explain the placement of 'would' in choices D and E.
'it' should refer to some noun just preceding it, right ?
How do we know what 'it' refers to ? :cry:

Why is A wrong here.... Aren't we comparing Any Star to the Sun..

Why is A wrong here.... Aren't we comparing Any Star to the Sun..

:no :no

We are comparing how a star of mass similar to that of sun will become a white dwarf. So we have to use "as".
Another problem with A is "expansion into red giant" and "ejection of gases" are not happening at the same time. So we can not use "ejecting"
we have to use "it will expand into X and (will) eject Y"

D is wrong because of the reason given by CHEN.

Hope this helps.

Late, but scientific theory sentences tend to use the modals (would/could/should).

The answer here is (E) for multiple reasons:

1) as....as.... comparison of actions
2) as would be the case.....will happen.... is a common hypothetical scientific phenomenon construction
3) proper use of commas

**Let`s just hope this doesn`t happen anytime in the near future :pray
