Interesting... More than 50 mln vs. the more than 50 mln... can someone "spoon feed" me on this one? I don't see the difference how C gives us the gap for another 50 mln... :dunnow

A. we need "the" to specifically point to 50 million. Without "the" sentence doesn't bring out proper contrast..

I believe, key is definite article "the" used in A.
"the" is properly used in A to make "more than 50 million" a definite figure.

So I would go with A.

B: 99% of 50 million is a specific number, meaning change
C: which 50 million? not specific
D, E out because 1) they use despite the fact which is wordy, and 2) they don't specifically refer to a set of turks
