"such" seems to be more proper than so and D is too wordy. It also has a meaning problem (today's what?) or it is I who has an understanding problem :lol:

"such" alone is not enough.

C is correct foor its correct idiom: "such ...as" is correct.

yes I agree... well... with "such as" part, I mean...

I tried to address this in my earlier posts, but nobody paid attention then... so I will ask this again...

Page 14 of MGMAT SC (bought mine a while ago... so pages are within 2-4 range)... Chapter 1, section "Clarity of Meaning: SUCH AS vs. LIKE"

Animals such as lions and zebras live on African continent.
this says that exactly lions and zebras do

Animals like lions and zebras live on African continent.
this says that animals SIMILAR to lions and tigers do

and every time I miss the question that deals with "LIKE" and "SUCH AS" it is because of this rule...

please voice your thoughts on this... how applicable is this rule to GMAT sentences? from all the mistakes I made, this rule hardly applied... but it's in my head all the time!

i also donot remember exactly. the rule you have given is correct. if i found the real test questions, i will post them here..

This is absoultely correct.

But in this question "such" is used as adjective and "as" is used for comparison. Sentence is not talking about examples. Thats why we need a clause after "as".

When we use "such as" to give examples then we must use nouns only.
Example: At gmatclub, there are many genius such as professor, and u2lover. :wink

The question is a test of "like vs as" and not "like vs such as".

We are comparing the act of commanding high fees between the artists of the past and the artists of the present. So "as" is right and not "of the kind" which is more like "like".

So C is the answer, which is concise and maintains the parallelism.
