Why would "who" not refer to the anthropologist ? Confused with these pronouns...

anthropologist staggered out of the mountains near Lassen Peak in 1912, deep in mourning for the last of his companions, expecting to be butchered and eaten by white ranchers.

All these things happened to anthropologist???? :roll: :roll: :roll:

True, but dont we go the other way; i.e. if there is a possible connotation to the anthropologist, eliminate the choice.

Valid point Guru - but "according to anthropologist Alfred Kroeber" is parenthetical - hence not essential to the overall sentence. The pronoun therefore must ALWAYS be consistent with the SUBJECT (which in this case is the wild indian).

This is just a hypothesis I have formed. I may or may not be correct. If somebody could confirm this it would be great.

The student, according to the teacher, WHO scores the maximum marks will be honored.

Here again it is the student who stands a chance of scoring the maximum marks.. so WHO will not modify the teacher.

Looks like D. For Parallelism.

Before all these discussions, I had gone for B.

A,C -> suggests the tribe staggered out of the mountain
D,E -> progressing 'having' inappropriate

B is best. 'who' is used only for person/people, so it ppoint to the survivor.
