I was going to pick E, but I guess not...

PS,
Can you clarify why a "had + past participle" of verb "pick" is wrong in this case? Due to two actions in the past, one preceding the other (Roses picked and then Renoir uttered his last words), doesn't this need a past perfect tense "had been picked".

Thanks/

Agree with the OA C.

D has a modifier problem - during the arrangement of a bouquet of roses
just picked from his garden in a vase on his bedroow windowsill

seems to suggest that the "garden was in a vase"

Haas - had been picked IMO is fine..but E apart from having the modifier problem as in D is also beset with a pronoun error - "they" has no referent.
C corrects these problem by applying "Just picked" indicating that the action of picking had just been completed ....

Saurabh,

You are the man. I did not even read the non-underlined part.

Haas,

my mistake. You are right.

I focussed on the action timing and missed the implication of "garden was in a vase".. :-)
Makes sense...

Thanks dwivedys...

Don't know what is happening today, i am getting all the answers correct (just today).

C

A and E, uses "they" without referrent so both are wrong
D ends with garden, followed by in a vase. The garden is not in the vase
Between B and C. I was tempted to chose B, but chose C because it conveys the meaning with minimal use of words. B is wordy.

I picked (C) as well.
Was looking for a word that provides action of arranging bouquet "as" renoir was uttering his last word. Between (A),(B) and (C), picked (C) as (A) [who is they] and (B) wordy also using being
have errors.

I almost hit myself for picking D..

It seemed so perfect, and it closed the passage off seeminglessly...

Staright (C). They in all the other answer choices lacks a clear referent.
