while is used as a conjunction .. can be related with 'however', 'notwithstanding', 'yet'..

here, 'while' is not used as a noun. author is trying to compare two habits.
hence, while should be used as a conjunction--joins/compares two sentences--& the meaning inferred should be 'notwithstanding'.

even if you relate 'while' with 'at the same time', it makes sense here. isn't it?
..at the same time, priests who shunned garlic...

i have never seen while used as a noun.

The answer given is B.

Akamai, could you help us decide.

1. is the use of "while " correct in C.
2. is use of "become" okay in B. i think we need "became".

My 2 cents:

Elimate choices to B and C.
B) has a problem with tense. "Become" I feel is incompatible with the non underlined portion.

C) mY money is on you. "...While the english priests soon became ill" is correct.

I don't see the discussion over the use of the subordinate conjustions while and whereas an issue here.

Anyone disagree?
