Talk about splitting SC hairs! Believe it or not, there is a certain concept being tested here. I have both the OA and OE for this one, but will not  divulge it until a fellow member can EXPLAIN the correct answer in his/her own words. This one is gonna ruminate...

These are the times that try men's souls.

A. These are the times that try men's souls.
B. Times like these try men's souls.
C. How trying it is on men's souls to live in these times.
D. These are trying times for men's souls.
E. Soulwise, these are trying times for men.

Straight A
"These are the times that try men's souls" Thomas Paine

I will go with B - "Times like these try men's souls."

I think the stress is on giving an example. Moreover "times that try" does not sound right.

A https://www.ushistory.org/Paine/crisis/c-01.htm .

These are the times (Refers to a period in time. )

Times like these ( Doesn't convey the meaning clearly )

This one is really wicked matt. Where did you find it? or are did u start making sc questions like kevincan who makes those math qs, i am always like  when i look at those math qs :(

Ok I think its A because that is the only one that is gramatically correct. Immediately a bell rung in my head that hey isn't it similar to the sentence structure of something like this: Those were the days when...

In this sentence the usage of that is very important for this sentence to make sense, what is the importance of these times.

I feel every sentence except C is grammatically correct.
As far as GMAT is concerned, the correct option should be either A or B.
Is it B for conciseness??

D sounds idiomatic to me.

D sounds similar to "This is a testing time for him"

C,D,E are out.
A or B hmmm. I find B more appealing but there is nothing wrong with original stem. A is my choice.

This was the explanation we were waiting for. The sentence is clear and direct, testing GMAT style cadence and the correct use/positioning of "that."

OA is (A) and Comrade Yurik nailed the original source.
