In order to evenly and effectively paint a rough surface, it is necessary to sand it and apply primer before applying the paint.
(A) it and apply primer before applying the paint
(B) it and prime it and paint it
(C) it, then prime it, then paint it
(D) the surface and apply primer before you
apply paint to the surface
(E) the surface, apply primer to the surface and then paint it

Ayushi, if you look at the answer choices given, can you please make sure there are no typos or missed words because choice A does not look anything like hte underlined part.

I thikn its A because the "it" has a clear referrant and A is gramatically correct in every sense.

In order to do X , it is necessary to do Y

It has been discussed earlier:

From the brutal SC list.

"it" clearly refers to the surface.

B and C are too redundant.

(A) survives.

Some options in the questions are designed to mislead people who have prepared for the exam. Option E is designed for those..I guess..

One more A.

Should be e.
It is not clear what "it" refers to in A, B and C. In D, it is not clear where the primer should be applied.
E for clarity.

 Looks like I'm in that list, even though I've hardly started preparing.

I dont see any best options in this. I guess we just have to chose lesser of the 5 evils.

B & C Completely out.
D verbooooose

A & E are two of the better choices
I dont like either but for E 'the surface, apply primer to the surface and then paint it ', no use of pronouns really put me off.

So, A is the last one standing is my answer.

I agree. DE are redundant. No need to write "surface" 3 times in one sentence. BC uses "prime it" instead of "apply prime"

A does not do a great job of showing that sanding comes before applying primer.
