All seem bad. I would say it's between A or B.
But I think the "were" in A is the wrong tense so I'll go with B

Please tell me you got this question in route to a V48

A- Cancun's commercial power throughout the lowlands seems to be from using its strategic position at the foot of the highlands, which were a source of jade, obsidian, and other valuable commodities.
B- Cancun's commercial power throughout the lowlands seems to have come using its strategic position at the foot of the highlands, a source of jade, obsidian, and other valuable commodities.
C- The commercial power of Cancun's throughout the lowlands seemed to have come from using its strategic position at the foot of the highlands , a source of jade, obsidian, and other valuable commodities. commerical power of cancun's is incorrect
D- Cancun's seemed to be using its strategic at the foot of the highlands, which was a source of jade, obsidian, and other valuable commodities, in becoming a commercial power throughout the lowland. Cancun's usage is wrong should be concun ?
E- Cancun's seems to have used its strategic at the foot of the highlands, a source of jade, obsidian, and other valuable commodities, to become a commercial power throughout the lowland. Cancun's usage is wrong should be concun ?

This question is not correctly written, Choices D and E are wrongly written. I also came across this question on GMATPREP.

EZO, please verify the question from the GMATPREP test.
Choice D and E have 'Cancun' not 'Cancun's'.... If I remember correctly
and then E would be the answer

thanks

gmacvik, you sound to be true.
Else, none of the answers are correct.

Unlike other cities should be followed by Cancun to keep parallelism.

gmacvik. You are totally right. D & E were written wrong:

D- Cancun seemed to be using its strategic at the foot of the highlands, which was a source of jade, obsidian, and other valuable commodities, in becoming a commercial power throughout the lowland.

E- Cancun seems to have used its strategic at the foot of the highlands, a source of jade, obsidian, and other valuable commodities, to become a commercial power throughout the lowland.

(C) compares the commercial power of Cacun with other cities. It must compare the commercial power of Cacun with the commercial power of other cities to be right.

I think the main difference between (D) an (E) is the idiom ' use X to become', instead of 'use X in becoming', which is awkward. So (E) is the right answer.

cheers!

D ,E correctly compares cities and Cancun

D uses the tense incorrectly.

E!
