Gas hydrates are increasingly being studied for their potential as X, as Y, and even as Z.

I'm with E

Why C is wrong?

Let's plug C into the original sentence. We get.

Gas hydrates, chemical compounds of water and natural gas, are increasingly being studied for their potential as huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and significant contributors to global warming.

Besides the lack of parallelism, the meaning is distorted.

The sentence with C in it indicates incorrectly that, 'sea floor instability' is caused by the studies

The phrase 'significant contributors' is incorrect.

Why not B guys?

I thought "potential to be" was the correct idiom rather than "potential as".
A is incorrect because it is missing the 'as'.

"potential as" and "potential to be" are both idiomatic

New England's potential as an energy giant depends on whether public and private universities can combine forces.

I see. Thanks buckkitty.

In that case I go for E as well.

OA please?
