I assume that 'tree' is plural in all choices
I think it depends on what the 'acquisitive hands' want to possess...

C is wrong, they wouldnt destroy the trees to expose the land, they destroy the trees to get wood ! 

E is wrong , because destroying the tree will definitely cause the land to be exposed, not can

D seems like which is incorrectly modifying trees , not sure but A sounds the best
